During its State of Unreal event today, Epic announced the official release of Unreal Engine 5.8, and as part of that, Lumen Light is up and running on Nintendo Switch 2.
According to the company’s announcement, the new mode “is designed to preserve much of the visual impact at a significantly lower GPU cost by using irradiance fields with probe occlusion.” It is twice as fast as Lumen High Quality.
Lumen is now viable where it wasn’t before. Epic went on to say that means “games that rely on global illumination for artistic purposes can run on Nintendo Switch 2 at 60 FPS.”
Epic previously shipped a preview version of its 5.8 update last month. Nintendo Switch 2 wasn’t specifically mentioned at the time, but we heard that there was a new Lumen mode to more easily allow for 60 FPS on handheld devices.
A few games made with Unreal Engine 5 have previously shipped on Nintendo Switch 2. However, some titles made with the tech haven’t been in the best state (and this also applies to other platforms). With Lumen Light, we should be seeing Unreal Engine 5-developed titles performing much better on Nintendo’s console.

これが市場のシェアを大きくとることによる恩恵ということにもなるわけです。
60fpsでの動作も容易になるということで、ますますスイッチ2にゲーム開発者が魅力を感じる対応と言えるでしょうね。
